North Coast Mud Trail returns with four days of ceramics, creativity and connection

The North Coast Mud Trail returns this August with its biggest program yet, expanding from its much-loved open studio weekend into a four-day celebration of ceramics across the Byron, Ballina and Lismore shires.

Running from 21 to 24 August 2026, the 14th annual event invites visitors to explore working ceramic studios, meet local makers, join hands-on workshops and discover new exhibitions celebrating the Northern Rivers’ thriving clay community.

The traditional Open Studio Weekend remains at the heart of the Mud Trail, with artists welcoming the public into their creative spaces on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August from 9am to 4pm. It’s a rare opportunity to see where the work is made, hear directly from the artists and gain insight into the techniques, inspiration and stories behind each piece.

New for 2026 are dedicated Workshop Days on Friday 21 and Monday 24 August, giving visitors the chance to create alongside participating potters. Whether you’re trying ceramics for the first time or looking to build your skills, these workshops offer a hands-on way to experience the region’s vibrant maker culture. Bookings are essential and places are filling quickly.

Also new this year, the Mud Trail extends beyond the studios into galleries across the region. A series of exhibitions, opening events and artist talks will showcase the depth and diversity of ceramic practice in the Northern Rivers, adding another layer to this year’s program.

Throughout the four days, visitors can also enjoy free live demonstrations and artist talks, offering a closer look at different techniques, creative processes and the stories behind the work.

Plan your Mud Trail adventure

The event stretches across the Byron, Ballina and Lismore shires, making it an ideal excuse for a scenic road trip through the Northern Rivers.

A printed 2026 Mud Map will be available from local cafés, galleries, stores and visitor information centres from early July, while an interactive online map will help visitors plan their route in advance.

Those who register through Humanitix will also go into the draw to win three nights’ accommodation in Bangalow, including access to a fully equipped ceramic studio, redeemable within 12 months.
