Byron Bay Beaches

The Byron Bay region is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in Australia — even the world. With warm, clear waters, Byron’s beaches offer excellent swimming and surfing conditions.

As well as swimming and surfing, you can experience Byron Bay’s beaches from the many walking tracks and lookout platforms along the coast. Stroll from idyllic Wategos to the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse — the most easterly point of mainland Australia — and soak up the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Many of the area’s beaches are patrolled seasonally, both in summer and during peak times. Main Beach, situated in the heart of Byron Bay’s township, has lifeguards all year. Please visit Byron Council’s website for full details on the dates of patrolled beaches in Byron Shire.

Between June and October, Byron Bay welcomes humpback whales on their annual migration. The lighthouse is considered one of the best whale-watching vantage points on the east coast. Expect to see dolphins playing in the waves year-round.

Byron Shire offers over 30km of beaches, from the busy, patrolled (in summer) beaches near the town, to isolated coves, nudist and dog-friendly beaches within 10-15 minutes drive and water temperature ranges from around 18°C in the winter to 26°C in the summer.
