MULLUMBIMBY — For more than 15 years, Uke Mullum has been bringing ukulele players together to make music. Established in 2011, the club meets every Wednesday night at Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club. Now it’s time to celebrate the original songwriters in the ukulele community.

The Original Uke Off, on Wednesday 18 November, promises a lively evening of original songs, big laughs and local stories, with live performers backed by a band. It’s an invitation to come along, enjoy the talent on our doorstep and give local songwriters a warm and enthusiastic audience.

The songs cover plenty of ground. Stephen has written a new song about going to Aldi to buy a stand-up paddleboard. Val Hodgson finds inspiration in Christmas shopping in Lismore and adventures in northern Australia, while Tracy Devine brings heartfelt stories, including a tribute to firefighters.

Then there’s Simone O’Brien, aka Dim Sim from Bay FM’s Roadtrip and bass player in menopausal punk duo Mutton. Her songs take a cheeky look at Australian slang, dodgy life choices and the realities of menopause. “CBF2BF: The menopausal lament” comes with a language warning and plenty of scope for laughs of recognition.

Presented by Uke Mullum and kindly supported by Son of Drum, the competition offers a recording and production prize for the winning song.

Bring some friends, have a laugh and come along to cheer the songwriters on. The evening runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Book online and save $5.
