The Bangalow Film Festival returns this June for its sixth year, bringing a curated program of film, music and live events to the Northern Rivers.
Running 11–21 June at the Bangalow A&I Hall, the 2026 festival will feature more than 20 premieres, special screenings and original productions. The full program will be announced next week, with several highlights already confirmed.
The festival opens with Whistle, a heartwarming documentary directed by Christopher Nelius. The film follows an eccentric group of international competitors as they gather in Hollywood for the Masters of Musical Whistling. Opening night will include an open bar, food trucks, live music and special guests.
A special screening of the cult Australian film Bad Boy Bubby will bring together director Rolf de Heer and actor Nicholas Hope for a rare in-person event.
The program also features Home of the Blizzard, a live film concert combining archival Antarctic footage with an original score performed by Romano Crivici, Carla Thackrah and the Syrinx Vocal Ensemble.
A major new addition in 2026 is the Green Frame Nature Documentary Award. This is Australia’s first award dedicated to nature documentary, with five international films competing. The initiative aims to give environmental storytelling its own platform and audience.
Alongside international releases, the festival continues its focus on local creatives. Each year, the event supports regional artists through commissions, collaborations, school programs and professional development opportunities.
Despite its growth, the festival remains independently run. A pop-up cinema is built inside the Bangalow A&I Hall each year, with projection, sound and seating installed from scratch. These costs are largely self-funded.
Festival director Christian Pazzaglia says community support is key to its future.
“We’ve always believed this festival belongs in Bangalow and the Northern Rivers. To keep it going, we need the support of the community that has helped build it.”
Donations are tax deductible and help secure the future of the festival. Supporters can also join the “Friends of the Festival” program, which includes passes, event invitations and exclusive access to guests.
