Local artist Jan Rae returns to the Byron area with a fresh solo exhibition titled Byron Hinterland Paintings at the gallery space of the Byron Community Centre. The show is on display now until 15 December 2025, open weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm.

The collection features luminous landscapes of the Byron hinterland—no buildings or man-made structures, just sky, land and light. Many of the works were created over the past year. Jan describes the exhibition as:

“This exhibition is all about the Byron hinterland, the beautiful environment that we live in… these works are about sky, land and the beauty of our environment.”

The venue is significant: Jan was one of the three artists behind the famed 1984 mural on the front of the Byron Community Centre building.

The show marks a homecoming of sorts: Jan’s return to the same building where she both created art and taught tango. Plus, It offers a fresh perspective on the region’s landscape—by stripping out the built environment, the artist invites viewers to reconnect with nature and the changing environment in a pure form.
