Byron Bay, October 2025: Byron Bay will be bursting with neon this Sunday 5 October as the Byron Community Market transforms Main Beach into a celebration of all things 1980s. The special Born in the 80s event is part of the Byron Community Centre’s 130 Years of Community Spirit celebrations, marking the decade the it first took on management of the iconic markets in 1987.

Market-goers can expect big hair, bright colours and even bigger tunes, with live music from The Versace Boys, Lainie Godiva and ObiSun, alongside a high-energy 80s dance workshop at 10am led by Byron’s own troupe, The Cassettes.

But the spotlight is on the crowd, visitors are encouraged to show off their best 80s fashion, from leg warmers and denim to sequins and shoulder pads. On-the-spot prizes will be awarded for standout looks, and a Tag & Win social media competition will give everyone a chance to take home extra rewards.

Carl Taylor, Byron Markets Manager, said the day is about fun and community connection.

“Born in the 80s is a chance to celebrate the history of the Byron Markets while creating a vibrant and memorable day for our stallholders, locals and visitors. The more outrageous the outfit, the better. It’s about getting involved, having fun and celebrating together in true Byron retro style.”

Kate Love, Communications Manager at Byron Community Centre, said the event ties directly to the 130 Years campaign.

“As part of our 130 Years of Community Spirit celebrations, this market is a nod to the decade we began managing the iconic Byron Community Market. It’s our way of honouring the past while inviting the community to celebrate the future with us , and what better way than with a big 80s party.”
