Northern Rivers Lager gets a hometown launch and a beer truck’s watery mishap gets its own pilot brew!

Stone & Wood is putting the (brewing) kettle on and inviting the Tweed community ‘round for an afternoon at the brewery on Saturday 29 August 2026 from 11am – 5pm.

Stone & Wood Open Brewery will see the hometown debut of Northern Rivers Lager alongside a limited edition Swamp Beer Pilot Batch. IYKYK.

“Every now and then we fling the roller door open and let the town see exactly what we get up to in here,” said Paul Tansley, Head of Creative & Strategy, Stone & Wood. “This year felt like one to really celebrate, giving Northern Rivers Lager a launch where it’s brewed and we also get to raise a glass to one of the best stories you’ll hear about Murwillumbah, or anywhere actually. Come for the beer, stay for the yarns.”

Opening from 11am Stone & Wood invites the community to explore a full afternoon of activities including live music from TV Misery, local legend Hayley Grace Trio from Bay Collective, O and Shae, and local emerging artist Ike.

Two bars will be pouring the full Stone & Wood family; Pacific Ale and Easy Pale Ale on tap, Citrus Radler and the brand-new Northern Rivers Lager in cans and – while it lasts – the Swamp Beer Pilot Batch. And to accompany your brew, local food trucks 2020 Smokehouse BBQ and Gunter’s Flammkuchen will be dishing up delicious snacks.

2026 marks 25 years since a truck carrying beer went into the Tweed River on a long weekend and Murwillumbah did what Murwillumbah does, a crew of cheeky locals dived in and swam the cargo out. It’s the kind of local lore that’s been recounted at pubs and barbecues ever since. At Stone & Wood Open Brewery it will be celebrated with storytelling sessions featuring locals who were actually there, old photos and memorabilia, highlights from the documentary, a community memory wall for visitors to share their own version of the tale and some extremely limited anniversary merchandise. Get it while you can!

Behind the scenes, guided brewery tours will run throughout the day at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, taking guests through the recent brewery upgrades and how our Northern Rivers Lager is made. The brewers, packaging crew, production team and maintenance team will all be on hand for a chat and happy to answer the questions visitors have always wanted to ask.

Local bands, musicians and DJs will provide the soundtrack for Stone & Wood’s Murbah Open House party, while a dunk tank will bring back the memories of diving for Murbah Swamp Beer!

In the backyard, kids will be kept busy with Malt Disney entertainment, face painting and activities running most of the day.

Murbah Open Brewery is free to attend, family-friendly and open to all ages. The event will raise money for local charities including Tweed palliative support charity, Wedgetail Retreat.
